Some characters are happy in empty space. You text, they text back, that’s the whole product. Others need a where and a why. That’s worlds and stories.
Worlds are the place
A world is the setting the character belongs to. The café. The ship. The rainy city. It gives the chat shared scenery so you’re not re-explaining the backdrop every ten messages.
Browse worlds on explore when you want atmosphere first. Then pair a character that actually fits there. A soft companion in a war epic world is a fun experiment, but it’s also how chats get confused.
Stories are the premise
A story is the situation. Why you’re talking. What’s in motion. The “you just walked into…” energy. It’s useful when free chat feels aimless and you want a clearer first page.
Good stories are light enough to enter and strong enough to steer. If the premise needs a wiki to understand, it’s too heavy for a hangout chat.
When to skip both
If you’re doing casual companion texting, you may not need either. Don’t add lore because it feels “complete.” Add it when the chat keeps asking for ground to stand on.
Build small, then enrich
Start with one clear place or one clear premise. Chat in it. Then add detail only where the conversation keeps bumping into missing pieces. Worlds and stories should support the hangout, not become homework.

Match energy first. A cozy character in a cozy world. A sharp character in a sharp premise. Crossovers can be fun after you know both pieces work alone.
If the chat spends half its turns re-explaining the setting, the world isn’t landing. If every reply is plot homework, the story is too stiff. Ease up until conversation can breathe.
Creating your own
Write the setting or premise the way you’d text it to a friend. Short. Concrete. Easy to enter. Then chat in it before you decorate. Details are cheaper once the core feels right.
